Description
Base Coat is a special mixture of adhesives, fillers and plasticisers for mixing with ordinary Portland cement to obtain a controlled mixture for repair of concrete and masonry, attaching and subsequent surfacing of polystyrene insulation boards prior to painting or finishing.
Purpose
Base Coat can be used as a “base coat” for levelling, patching and filling masonry, concrete and plaster before painting, with or without Glass Fibre reinforcing Mesh. It can be used as an adhesive for pasting insulation board (polystyrene) or feature segments onto the interior or exterior of buildings before covering with Glass Fibre Mesh impregnated with the material.
It is also combined with CemWash, Cemcote or Colorcem to create Satincrete.
Types
One type only.
Applications
Ideal for attaching polystyrene insulation boards or shaped architectural feature segments of polystyrene to the interior or exterior of buildings and the subsequent hard surfacing of the former to take paint or plaster.
Can be used as a leveller and filler for masonry, concrete or plaster surfaces with or without Glass Fibre reinforced Mesh. For this application Base Coat can be built up to about 10mm in a single pass. It is also combined with CemWash, Cemcote or Colorcem to create Satincrete.
Note
Ambient temperature must be higher than 4oC. Protect from freezing in the container and for at least 6 hours after application. Use only on surfaces that are sound, clean, dry or unpainted unless prepared as entioned.
Avoid application in direct sunlight to minimise premature drying.
Site Work
Surface preparation
All surfaces should be cleaned of contaminants such as dirt, dust, oils, etc. without damaging the substrate. Painted substrates must have the paint removed in such a way as to leave no more than 10% of the paint on the surface.

Mixing
Mix 25 kg Base Coat with 5 litres water and, while stirring continuously, slowly add 25 kg ordinary Portland cement. Small amounts of clean potable water may be added to obtain desired consistency. Leave mixture to stand for 5 minutes before re-mixing and applying. Use all mixed material within 2 hours. Half batches may be mixed for convenience. The addition of additives such as plasticisers, pigments, accelerators, etc. is not recommended under any circumstances
Adhesive application
Application
Apply Base Coat to the entire surface using a 6 -10mm notched trowel. Press polystyrene insulation board firmly so as to flatten adhesive between substrate and board.
Base Coat application onto styrene
Apply Base Coat to a uniform thickness of about 2mm using a steel float. Immediately press Glass Fibre Mesh into wet Base Coat. Smooth the material with a trowel until the mesh is totally embedded and the pattern of the mesh does not show through.
Creating even suction
Walls with areas of uneven suction should be primed with a solution of 1 volume CemBond and 3 volumes water. While still tacky, skim with a 5 to 6mm layer of Base Coat. Leave to dry for 24 hours. The surface can now be coated with any of Cemcrete’s wall finishes.
Leveller or filler
Apply Base Coat to cleaned substrate to required thickness (no more than 6mm per coat) using a steel trowel, making sure material is to correct level.
25 kg Base Coat mixed with 25kg OPC will cover approximately 9 - 10m
