Huis Kaalvoet | West Coast
Huis Kaalvoet sits on the wild edge of the West Coast at Elandsbaai, a stretch of South African coastline that has its own particular character, windswept and unhurried, shaped by the Atlantic and the fynbos and a quality of light that feels unlike anywhere else.

Architect and interior designer Hanno de Swardt of Onnah Design envisioned a house that would effortlessly complement this landscape through appropriate sizing, scale and aesthetic. The result is a home built entirely around the idea of barefoot living, and the surfaces chosen to carry that idea are quietly, perfectly suited to it.

Colour Hardener in Coastal Grey runs across the floors throughout the entire house. It is a finish that knows the brief. Coastal Grey brings the tones of the West Coast indoors, the pale overcast light, the bleached stone, the early morning colour of the beach before the day begins. Underfoot across every room, it creates a sense of continuity that ties the two wings of the house together and grounds the interior without ever weighing it down. It is a hard-wearing finish that suits a holiday home perfectly: it can take sandy feet, bare feet, and everything a family or a gathering of friends brings through the door.

In the bathrooms, RenoCrete Clam was applied to the walls and vanities. The name suits it, a soft, shell-like neutral that sits comfortably between white and the faintest suggestion of warmth. Against the Coastal Grey floors it creates a tonal relationship that feels considered but not contrived, the kind of pairing that simply feels right in a room where you want to be calm.

The kitchen counter is finished in RenoCrete Sea Foam, and here the palette makes its most deliberate move toward the sea. Sea Foam is a clean, almost-white tone that carries a quiet coastal freshness. In a kitchen on the West Coast, it belongs entirely. |

Hanno de Swardt describes the design approach as one focused on creating a relaxed and calm atmosphere first and foremost. The three Cemcrete finishes across this home reflect that intent at every level, in the colour choices, the material honesty, and the way they work together to let the house breathe and the landscape do the talking.
