This home is a modern and industrial space where Cemcrete’s finishes were used on the walls and ceilings (yes, our coatings can be applied on ceilings as well) to create an impressive feature, showcasing the owners' furniture and art pieces beautifully. What we also love about the home is how the application style of Cemcrete's finishes are perfectly imperfect. Enjoy the tour.
We chatted to the owners about their Cemcrete finished home:
How would you describe the style of your home? “When I bought the property in 2015, an architect friend of mine initially described it as a late eighties beach house design with its myriad of corners, indoor planters and multiple levels which was terribly neglected by the previous owner. After the intensive renovation project however, my fiancé and I aimed for a modern look bachelor’s pad, with moody and dark undertones to accentuate our love of art and assorted furniture pieces.” Why did you choose Cemcrete wall finishes for your home? "I once walked past a synagogue in upper west New York, which had this rough cement finish walls with black doors and black window frames, and in the midst of our renovation process I walked into the Cemcrete showroom and saw a SatinCrete finish which instantly reminded me of that synagogue in New York. I remember calling my builder, PG Nolte from CEMRIGHT, and asked him to immediately stop all wall preparations and wait until I showed him this Cemcrete product. We were both very impressed with the look and the texture. Not only does it provide an excellent focus throughout the house, but it immediately brings a more modern and industrial feel to our living areas. We used a criss-cross skimming technique to add to the natural mottling effect of the product and to also provide some texturised layers. The look was so impressive that I asked the builders to go ahead and even cover the ceilings which brought a continuity in the design flow of the house. The natural colours of the cement now works with whatever piece of art or furniture I pair it with, albeit modern or antique. The walls became such a popular look among my friends and family members that someone even did a small marriage officiating ceremony in the house and another person had a full professional photo shoot done for herself, just so that the pictures could have this amazing backdrop." What Cemcrete products and colours did you choose and why?
"I chose the SatinCrete Pewter colour, as well as the CreteCote Grey which blended in nicely with the style we had in mind."
What is your favourite characteristic of a cement finish?
"Definitely the industrial look and texture of the products I’ve used, which instantaneously creates focus and draws attention. The versatility of a cement finish lies not only in the many ways in which style, application and colour can differ, but also in how it blends with any possible furnishing in a house. This allows for an impressive feature in the property, which a normal coat of paint wouldn’t have been able to provide. Some people might argue that a cement finish might not be as cost-effective as a coat of paint or the use of wallpaper with regards to labour, preparation and material costs, but if you keep durability, upkeep and aesthetics in mind, some well-designed cement finished walls can be the best decision during renovations."
Would you say Cemcrete finishes are pet-friendly?
"Oh yes. We have three very busy dogs who constantly runs around in the house, sometimes brushing against the walls or even jumping up against it. Normally that would have given me minor heart attacks but with the Cemcrete finishes you don’t see any marks among the mottled look. If there happened to be a muddy paw mark against the wall, dabbing it with some lukewarm water and a cloth clears it right up. Once I saw that my neighbour's cat was in my house, slowly brushing up against the layered texture of the SatinCrete walls, so she apparently liked it too, but her pleasure was short lived since my dogs saw her and chased her away."
Any tips for prospective homeowners when choosing finishes for their homes?
"Don’t go too bold with vivid colours when choosing a permanent fixture such as walls or floors. Rather stick with basic colours on permanent finishes and accentuate the room with whichever colour accessories you prefer. Bolder colours tend to age quickly and then regret sets in. A lot of people would advise, when doing a budget for renovations, that you should always add an extra amount over and above your initial budget to allow for unforeseen expenses. That’s true, but also remember that finishes in a home is not something that you can be cheap with. Rather save up and buy the best version of the product that you had in mind, because doing finishes around your home is not something that you do every weekend. It should be fabulous and amazing the first time round."

Please note:
We make every effort to accurately represent our products’ colours in all digital and print formats. However it is important to remember that while the Cemcrete colour ranges are standard, they often appear different in various formats and on site. Lighting, camera settings, screen display, printer settings and the style of your contractor are only a few factors that contribute to the colours being perceived differently. We recommend that you choose colours from actual on-site samples completed by your contractor, and signed off before the start of the project.
